Today I’m giving you a short update on how my „Polish through Russian“ project is going.

The last weeks of studying Polish have been quite intense. After we had learned to look for words we already know in a text we totally immersed into grammar. We’re rushing through the whole grammar of Polish and it’s simply amazing! I have to admit that I am a grammar freak and I really love tables with declination endings etc. But this time I feel a little bit overwhelmed by the intensity and the speed at which we’re moving forward.

Here is a quick overview of the topics we worked on in just 4 lessons of about 2 hours each:

Verbs:

• conjugation present tense
• conjugation past tense
• reflexive verbs
• aspects

Prepositions

• how to use the most common prepositions

Nouns

• all possible declination patterns of nouns

Adjectives

• just started

That’s a tough programme and I’m happy that we have 2 weeks of Easter vacation, so that I can take time to go through everything again.

I think the pace at which we’re going is just fine for me, it brings me to my personal limit but is still within. I prefer intense classes to slow ones, because otherwise I would lose motivation.

I can really see how using Russian as a bridge language facilitates the progress of hacking the Polish language. For example, you don’t need to learn the awful topic of aspects again, as they are more or less like in Russian. That saves weeks or even months of time.

The same applies to declination tables. We just rush through the endings and pay attention to the endings that are different from the Russian declinations which we already know by heart.

What’s next?

During the Easter vacation I want to go through everything we’ve learned so far again. Furthermore, I want to collect a lot of texts so that I have a lot of reading material for the next weeks. I feel like I am ready for reading

Do you have any tips for me where to find interesting texts in Polish?

Heute möchte ich euch ein kurzes Update über mein Polnisch über Russisch Projekt geben.

Die letzten Wochen Polnisch waren sehr intensiv. Nachdem wir gelernt haben, wie wir bekannte Wörter im Text erkennen können, tauchen wir gerade vollkommen in die Grammatik ab. Wir rasen durch die gesamte polnische Grammatik und es ist einfach wundervoll! Ich muss ja zugeben, dass ich ein Grammatikfreak bin und ich liebe Tabellen mit Deklinationsendungen etc. Aber fühle ich mich gerade fast einen bisschen erschlagen von der Intensität und der Geschwindigkeit, in der wir vorangehen.

Hier ein kurzer Überblick, welche Themen wir in den letzten vier Kursen à 2 Stunden durchgearbeitet haben:

Verben:

• Konjugation im Präsens
• Konjugation in der Vergangenheit
• Reflexive Verben
• Aspekte

Präpositionen:

• Anwendung der häufigsten Präpositionen

Substantive:

• alle Deklinationsmuster der Substantive

Adjektive:

• gerade begonnen

Dieses Programm hat es wirklich in sich und ich bin froh, dass wir jetzt 2 Wochen Osterferien haben, damit ich nochmals in Ruhe alles durchgehen kann.

Ich glaube, die Geschwindigkeit, die wir fahren, ist gerade so in Ordnung für mich. Ich komme auf jeden Fall an meine Grenzen, aber noch nicht darüber hinaus. Ich mag intensive Kurse sowieso viel lieber als langsame, da verliere ich schnell meine Motivation.

Es wird ganz deutlich, wie sehr Russisch uns als Brückensprache das Erlernen der Polnischen Sprache erleichtert. Zum Beispiel müssen wir nicht noch einmal dieses furchtbare Thema der Aspekte lernen, denn sie sind mehr oder weniger gleich wie in Russisch. Das spart Wochen oder sogar Monate an Zeit.

Dasselbe gilt für die Deklinationsmuster. Wir arbeiten uns eigentlich nur schnell durch eine Tabelle und konzentrieren uns darauf, welche Endungen anders als die russischen Endungen sind, denn die können wir ja bereits auswendig.

Wie geht’s weiter?

In den Osterferien will ich jetzt alles, was wir bisher gelernt haben, noch einmal wiederholen. Außerdem will ich viele Texte sammeln, damit ich für die nächsten Wochen viel Lesematerial habe. Ich glaube, ich bin bereit zum Lesen
