As some of you might have guessed from this post, it’s about time to start a new language!! There are some languages I’m particularly interested in and now it’s time tackle the first of them: Catalan. When I tell people that I find Catalan very interesting, they either look at me confused because they don’t even know that Catalan is language or tell me that it’s not worth learning Catalan because “nobody speaks it”. But I love languages “nobody speaks” because then I know something not everybody knows! I think so called minority languages are very interesting – not because of the number of speakers (actually about 7 million people speak Catalan, that’s not bad) but because I find language related politics very interesting. Which status does a language in a country have and why? What does this mean for the language and its speakers on the long-term and in daily life? And what does the language do to protect itself? Catalan is a Romance language and as you might know I’m particularly interested in this language family. I have a certain knowledge in four Romance languages: Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. These languages + Romanian are the five Romance languages people usually know. But there are more languages to discover in this family. This project is heavily influenced by my latest thoughts and reflections. I recently decided to focus more on reading and in a recent project I already tried to boost my passive skills in a language through another language I already speak. In this project I want to combine these experiences and my goal is: based on my knowledge in other Romance languages I want to able to read authentic texts in Catalan. My goal is not listening and not speaking, I won’t do any writing. Just reading for pleasure and discovering the specialities of the language. Recently, I spent a few days in Barcelona where I spend some hours in a book store. I ended up buying four books in Catalan. I plan to read these four books until December 2014, so you see, it’s not going to be a very time-consuming project. It’s kind of a first test to see how well I will do and then I will make an evaluation and decide about how to proceed. My method will mainly be reading and analysing the text I’m reading. I will not use a typical course book. I currently have a grammar book at home that I found in the library, but I don’t plan to study any grammar, dialogues etc. You may ask yourself, if reading only is a good method to learn a new language. Usually, I would say no. I would never use this method for a language that is completely alien to me, for example Turkish. But Catalan is my fifth Romance language and I already realized in Barcelona that I can understand a lot of the written language. For me it would be incredibly boring to start Catalan by learning “My name is Dani and I am from Austria”. I will work a little bit on vocabulary and I decided to make use of a method I’ve come across recently: goldlisting (You can find a very detailed description here) After the Polyglot Gathering in Berlin I started using this method and I really like it because I don’t have to use my computer or any mobile device for this method. I spend way too many hours in front of screens, so this method is a welcome change. While reading I will note some words I come across and then put them into my “headlist”. But at the beginning I want to do one thing of “traditional” language learning: I want to learn the pronunciation of Catalan. I don’t want to learn the written language only; I also want to know from the beginning on how the words sound. So learning the pronunciation will be the first step, and then I will start reading. I’ll start the project on August 1st, 2014 and the end is planned for December 31st, 2014. But this end date is flexible. If I’m highly motivated and read all books in two months, it’s fine too. There is no specific rhythm I want to stick to – I want to be flexible and simply enjoy the process. This is going to be the 9th foreign language I study, so I guess there is no need for stress I realized that I’m now at a point where I don’t need to learn more languages to brush up my CV, impress potential bosses or boost my international career. So basically every decision about learning a new language is a decision of passion. And that’s what this project should be. I want to learn something new, I want to learn something interesting and I want to enjoy it. I think summer is the perfect time to start such an easy project. So if you decide to follow this project, you can’t expect many updates that analyse my progress in detail. But keep reading if you want to read a little bit about the joy of starting a new language If you prefer projects with a more “practical” goal, don’t be disappointed because I will start another project that focuses more on that very soon! Oh, and I should mention the books I’m planning to read. Let me tell you first, I had a great time in the book store. I had no specific plans about the books I wanted to read except that I wanted to buy at least one Agatha Christie novel. Guess where I ended up: in the kids department! I loved it! It seemed like my inner kid took control over me and I was flashed by browsing through all the adventure stories I knew from my childhood. So my choice is a bit untypical from the point of age but not from the types of books I usually read: Agatha Mystery – L’espasa del rei d’Escòcia (by Sir Steve Stevenson) – A story about a young girl named Agatha as the detective… Les Aventures d’Alfred & Agatha – La cursa d’Anglaterra (by Ana Campoy) – The description says something like: What would have happened if Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie had met in their childhood? La muntanya dels mils dracs (by Thomas Brezina) – The author is a famous Austrian writer and his books accompanied me through all my childhood. I had to get one of his books when I saw them! You see, I’m still in this whodunit-genre I love so much. And of course I also bought one of my favourite Agatha Christie novels: L’assassinat de Roger Ackroyd What are your upcoming language (or private) projects? Was gibt ein paar Sprachen, die mich besonders interessieren, und jetzt ist es an der Zeit, die erste davon anzupacken: Katalanisch. Wenn ich Leuten erzähle, dass Katalanisch eine sehr interessante Sprache ist, schauen sie mich entweder verdutzt an, weil sie nicht einmal wissen, das Katalanisch eine Sprache ist, oder sie sagen mir nur, dass es sich nicht lohnt, Katalanisch zu lernen, weil das ja „sowieso niemand spricht“: Aber ich liebe Sprachen, die „niemand spricht“, weil ich dann etwas kann, das jeder kann! Ich finde so genannte Minderheitensprachen sehr interessant. Nicht jetzt aufgrund ihrer Sprecherzahl (immerhin sprechen 7 Millionen Menschen Katalanisch, das ist nicht so übel), sondern weil ich Sprachpolitik sehr interessant finde. Welchen Status hat eine Sprache in einem Land und warum? Was bedeutet das für die Sprache und ihre Sprecher langfristig und im Alltag? Und was macht die Sprache, um sich selbst zu schützen? Katalanisch ist eine romanische Sprache und wie ihr vielleicht wisst, interesse ich mich für diese Sprachfamilie ganz besonders. Ich habe Vorkenntnisse in vier romanischen Sprachen: Spanisch, Französisch, Italienisch und Portugiesisch. Diese Sprachen + Rumänisch sind dann die fünf romanischen Sprachen, die man normalerweise kennt. Es gibt in dieser Familie noch viel mehr Sprachen zu entdecken. Dieses Projekt wird stark von meinen Gedanken der letzten Wochen beeinflusst. Kürzlich habe ich mich dazu entschieden, mich mehr auf das Lesen zu konzentrieren und in einem anderen Projekt habe ich bereits versucht, meine passiven Kenntnisse durch Kenntnisse in einer anderen Sprache zu verbessern. In diesem Projekt will ich nun diese Erfahrungen kombinieren und mein Ziel ist es, basierend auf meinen Kenntnissen in anderen romanischen Sprachen fähig zu sein, authentische Texte auf Katalanisch zu lesen. Mein Ziel ist weder Hören noch Sprechen, ich werde auch nichts schreiben. Nur vergnügliches Lesen und die Besonderheiten der Sprache entdecken. Kürzlich war ich einige Tage in Barcelona, wo ich ein paar Stunden in einem Buchladen verbrachte. Schließlich habe ich dann vier Bücher auf Katalanisch gekauft. Ich möchte diese vier Bücher bis Dezember 2014 lesen. Ihr seht also schon, das Projekt wird nicht besonders zeitaufwändig werden. Es soll mal ein erster Test sein, um zu sehen, wie gut ich lesen kann und dann werde ich entscheiden, wie es weiter gehen soll. Meine Methode ist also hauptsächlich lesen und den Text dabei zu analysieren. Ich werde kein normales Kursbuch verwenden. Ich habe im Moment ein Grammatikbuch zu Hause, das ich in der Bibliothek gefunden habe. Ich habe aber nicht vor Grammatik oder irgendwelche Dialoge zu lernen. Ihr fragt euch vielleicht, ob nur Lesen wirklich eine geeignete Methode sein kann, um eine neue Sprache zu erlernen. Normalerweise würde ich sagen, nein. Ich würde seo eine Methode niemals für eine Sprache verwenden, die mir komplett fremd ist, zum Beispiel Türkisch. Aber Katalanisch ist meine fünfte romanische Sprache und in Barcelona habe ich auch schon gemerkt, dass ich viel der geschriebenen Sprache verstehe. Für mich wäre es total langweilig, jetzt nochmal anzufangen bei „Ich heiße Dani und komme aus Österreich.“ Ich werde auch ein bisschen Vokabeln lernen und dabei eine Methode verwenden, die ich kürzlich kennengelernt habe: Goldlisting (Ihr findet hier eine detaillierte Beschreibung) Nach dem Polyglot Gathering in Berlin habe ich diese Methode mal ausprobiert und sie gefällt mir gut. Besonders gefällt mir, dass ich keinen Computer oder sonst ein mobiles Gerät dafür brauche. Ich verbringe sowieso schon viel zu viel Zeit vor irgendwelchen Bildschirmen und somit ist diese Methode eine willkommene Abwechselung. Während des Lesens werde ich mir ein paar interessante Wörter notieren und sie dann in meine „Headlist“ übertragen. Aber am Beginn mache ich doch etwas vom „traditionellen“ Sprachen lernen. Ich möchte die katalanische Aussprache lernen. Ich kann nicht einfach nur die geschriebene Sprache lernen, sondern muss auch wissen, wie die Wörter klingen. Also werde ich im ersten Schritt die Aussprache lernen, dann kommt das Lesen. Ich beginne das Projekt am 1. August 2014 und das Ende ist jetzt mal mit 31. Dezember 2014 festgesetzt. Aber dieses Enddatum ist flexibel. Falls ich hochmotiviert bin und alle Bücher schon in zwei Monaten lese, ist es auch ok. Es gibt keinen speziellen Zeitplan, den ich einhalten will. Ich möchte flexibel bleiben und das Projekt einfach genießen. Das wird meine neunte Fremdsprache werden, also ich glaube, ich brauche mir keinen Stress mehr zu machen Ich glaube, ich bin an einem Punkt angelangt, an dem ich nicht noch mehr Sprachen lernen muss, um meinen Lebenslauf aufzubessern, potentielle Arbeitgeber zu beeindrucken oder meine internationale Karriere voranzutreiben. Daher ist jede Entscheidung für eine neue Fremdsprache immer eine Entscheidung aus Leidenschaft. Und genauso soll dieses Projekt auch sein. Ich möchte etwas Neues lernen, ich möchte etwas Interessantes lernen und ich will es genießen. Ich glaube, der Sommer ist die perfekte Zeit, um so ein „leichtes“ Projekt zu starten. Wenn ihr euch also dazu entschließt, diesem Projekt zu folgen, dürft euch kaum Updates erwarten, ihn denen ich detailliert meinen Fortschritt analysiere. Aber kommt auf jeden Fall mit, wenn ihr mehr über die Freude eine neue Sprache zu lernen lesen möchtet Wenn ihr Projekte bevorzugt, die eine praktischere Zielsetzung haben, braucht ihr auch nicht enttäuscht zu sein, denn ich starte in Kürze noch genau ein solches Projekt. Ach ja, ich sollte vielleicht noch die Bücher erwähnen, die ich lesen werde. Zunächst sei mal gesagt, dass ich wirklich viel Spaß im Buchladen hatte. Ich hatte keine genau Vorstellung darüber, welche Bücher ich lesen wollte. Außer dass ich mir zumindest ein Agatha Christie Buch kaufen wollte. Und nun stellt euch vor, wo ich gelandet bin: in der Kinderbuchabteilung! Es war super! Es war so, als ob mein inneres Kind die Kontroller ergriffen hätte und ich wühlte mich total begeistert durch die ganzen Abenteuergeschichten, die ich noch aus meiner Kindheit kenne. Und so war meine schlussendliche Wahl ein bisschen untypisch für mein Alter, aber nicht untypisch was die Wahl des Genres betrifft: Agatha Mystery – L’espasa del rei d’Escòcia (Sir Steve Stevenson) – Eine Geschichte über eine junge Detektivin namens Agatha. Les Aventures d’Alfred & Agatha – La cursa d’Anglaterra (Ana Campoy) – Auf dem Klappentext steht so ungefähr: Was wäre passiert, wenn sich Alfred Hitchcock und Agatha Christie bereits als Kinder kennengelernt hätten?
