Although I’ve already tried several things related to (learning) foreign languages, this is my first language project with a specific goal and plan of action.
So what is it all about? I already have some knowledge in four romance languages: Spanish (my major at university), French (five years in school), Italian (beginner’s level) and Portuguese (beginner’s level).
Based on this pre-knowledge and because of the reasons listed below, I found it interesting to try the following:
Boost my knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in French, Italian and Portuguese, using Spanish as the guiding language
Why doing this project?
1) In the beginner’s classes of Italian and Portuguese that I attended not long ago, I realized, that if I do not properly study words, verbforms etc. I simply mix them up with Spanish. Just an example from my own experience: In an Italian text I once wrote: *il cepolla - a word, that simply does not exist (at least in the languages I know). But how did that happen? The Spanish word for onion is cebolla - a word that comes to my mind easily, as I deal with the Spanish language nearly every day. The „real“ Italian word would be cipolla. So when creating *cepolla I was able to remember that the „b“ in the Spanish word cebolla becomes „p“ in Italian but I forgot about the change from „e“ to „i“.
As I am a perfectionist, this is something I want to avoid by all chances and I know, that I need to sit down and focus on these slight but important differences in grammar and vocabulary. Comparing the languages and realizing differences will help me to improve my level in all of them.
2) There are a lot of people out there saying „Hey, you speak Spanish and French, so it must be really easy for you to speak Portuguese“/“Oh, you must understand Italian, isn’t it so similar?“ These languages do of course have a lot in common and therefore it might be easier to learn them, but I think it’s not as simple as it might seem. So in order to give them valid answers on their questions, I will just give it a try.
3.) Quite simple: I want to improve my level in those languages.
Plan of action:
I will start my project on Monday, 29th of July and will work on it Mon-Fri, 3 hours each day. These 3 hours are reserved for grammar and vocabulary work only.
In addition I will study my daily Anki-cards (about 40 minutes a day) - I’ve already set up a deck for each language.
At least one hour each day is reserved to expose myself to authentic language, by reading, listening to the radio, watching TV etc.
My summer vacation ends at the beginning of October, which is when the project ends as well. In between, I will be on vacation two times, one week each, so during this time I won’t study any particular new stuff but use Anki as usual and of course read a lot on the beach.
Project goal:
The goal was actually the hardest part for me to define. In only two months I won’t be able to strengthen all skills. So I eventually decided to focus on grammar and vocabulary only. This will help to improve my reading capacity which I want to strenghten with this project.
During the project, my Spanish won’t improve much, but it will be a good revision of the grammar and I might add up some missing words of basic vocabulary. My Spanish is quite fluent, although I’m not happy with my level of speaking and I do, of course, make mistakes.
French: I studied French in school and would say I reached a B2 level. That was some years ago and although I was exposed to the language every now and then, I definitely need to revise all grammar and vocabulary. But this will be easiest task of all, as I’ve already heard most of the stuff I’ll study.
So it’s my goal to acquire a solid and high B2 level, maybe C1 in reading.
Italian & Portuguese: I do have a basic knowledge in both languages, but basically I start from scratch. For what I already know, it will be quite easy to get the grammar rules, although I need to focus on the slight differences of forms. But there are a lot of topics to deal with in this short period of time and I really want to achieve a profound knowledge.
An advanced level of B1/ B2 is the goal for both languages

Ich habe ja schon einiges in Bezug auf Sprachen (lernen) ausprobiert, jetzt starte ich aber mein erstes richtiges Sprachenprojekt - mit Ziel und Schlachtplan.
Worum geht es? Ich habe bereits Vorkenntnisse in Spanisch, Französisch, Italienisch und Portugiesisch, allerdings auf ziemlich unterschiedlichem Niveau. Spanisch ist mein Hauptfach an der Universität, Französisch habe ich fünf Jahre lang in der Schule gelernt und in Italienisch und Portugiesisch schlage ich mich mit Anfängerkenntnissen herum.
Basierend auf all diesen unterschiedlichen Vorkenntnissen, will ich nun folgendes versuchen:
mittels Spanisch meine Grammatik- und Vokabelkenntnisse in Französisch, Italienisch und Portugiesisch auf ein gutes Niveau bringen.
Warum dieses Projekt?
1) Während zwei Anfängerkursen in Italienisch und Portugiesisch, bemerkte ich immer wieder, dass ich Wörter, Verbformen etc. unbedingt ganz strukturiert und konzentriert lernen muss, da ich sonst alles durcheinander mische. Ein reales Beispiel: Als ich einmal auf Italienisch etwas über Zwiebeln sagen wollte, produzierte ich das Wort *cepolla. Nun, dieses Wort existiert leider nicht (zumindest in den Sprachen, die ich kenne). Aber woher kommt diese Konstruktion? Das spanische Wort für Zwiebel ist cebolla. Spanische Wörter fallen mir meist schneller ein, ich beschäftige mich fast täglich mit dieser Sprache. Das wirkliche italienische Wort für Zwiebel wäre cipolla. Ich dachte also noch daran, das b aus Spanisch in p abzuändern, aber für die Umstellung e zu i hat’s nicht mehr gereicht.
Was Sprachen angeht, kann ich eine echte Perfektionistin sein und solche Kreationen/Fehler will ich unter allen Umständen vermeiden. Durch den Vergleich der vier Sprachen will ich diese kleinen aber feinen Unterschiede besser erkennen und somit meine Kenntnisse auf ein höheres Niveau bringen.
2) Es gibt so viele Leute, die so Aussagen tätigen, wie „Ach, du sprichst ja eh schon Spanisch und Französisch, dann dürfte ja Portugiesisch gar kein Problem für dich sein.“ oder „Ach, dann verstehst du sicher auch Italienisch!“. Klar, diese Sprachen haben aufgrund ihrer Abstammung viel gemeinsam, aber kann man solche Dinge wirklich so einfach sagen? Um dann auch eine qualifizierte Antwort geben zu können, werde ich es einfach mal ausprobieren
3) Ganz simpel: Ich will meine Sprachkenntnisse verbessern.
Mein Schlachtplan:
Mein Projekt startet am Montag, 29.07. Ich werde Montag-Freitag jeweils drei Stunden täglich daran arbeiten. Diese drei Stunden sind reserviert für Grammatik- und Vokabelarbeit.
Zusätzlich übe ich sowieso jeden Tag mit Anki (ca. 40 Min/Tag), das werde ich natürlich weiter machen. Ich habe bereits Decks für jede Sprache angelegt.
Mindestens eine Stunde am Tag lese ich oder höre Musik, schaue Fernsehen etc.
Ich habe bis Oktober Zeit, dann sind die Sommerferien vorbei. Solange wird auch mein Projekt dauern. Dazwischen bin ich zweimal jeweils eine Woche weg. Im Urlaub setze ich das Grammatiklernen aus, aber Anki ist natürlich dabei. Außerdem werde ich im Strand mit Sicherheit sehr viel lesen.
Projektziel:
Das war für mich das Schwerste: mir ein Ziel zu setzen. Ich habe gut zwei Monate Zeit, kann also nicht an allen Sprachkompetenzen arbeiten. Daher habe ich mich schlussendlich dafür entschieden, mich auf Grammatik und Wortschatz zu konzentrieren.
Durch das Projekt wird sich mein Spanisch jetzt wohl nicht wahnsinnig verbessern, aber es ist eine gute Wiederholung der Grammatik und vielleicht kommen auch noch ein paar bislang nicht gekannte Vokabeln des Grundwortschatzes hinzu. Mein Spanisch ist recht flüssig, wobei ich mit meinem Sprechniveau noch nicht ganz glücklich bin. Natürlich produziere ich immer wieder einige Fehler beim Schreiben und verstehe nicht jedes Wort.
Französisch: Ich habe fünf Jahre Französisch in der Schule gelernt und würde mal sagen, habe dabei ein B2-Level erreicht. Das ist allerdings schon ein paar Jahre her. Obwohl ich immer wieder mal mit der Sprache zu tun hatte, muss ich die Grammatik und die Vokabeln noch mal grundlegend wiederholen. Aber das wird wohl der einfachste Teil des Projektes werden, schließlich habe ich alles schon mal gehört. Mein Ziel ist es, ein solides B2+ Limit zu bekommen/zu halten.
Italienisch & Portugiesisch: Ich habe zwar Grundkenntnisse, aber ich fange praktisch nochmal bei null an. Soweit ich das bis jetzt einschätzen kann, wird es recht einfach werden, die Grammatikregeln zu erlernen, allerdings muss ich wirklich konzentriert und fokussiert arbeiten, um eben diese erwähnten Feinheiten zu erkennen und richtig anzuwenden.
Ziel: B1+/B2 in beiden Sprachen.

Hauptsächlich über ehrliche Selbsteinschätzung.
