6 ways of practising a language while doing the housework

I don’t know about you, but I’m one of these ordinary people who have to take care of their flat and do some housework, at least once in a while. And it’s actually quite a substantial amount of time per week you usually have to spend on vacuuming, cleaning and ironing. But the good thing about housework is: it’s ideal for multitasking and you can it jazz it up with some language learning activities!

6-ways-of-practising-a-lang

1.) Watching TV or a DVD in your target language

From my experience, this works best with ironing because you don’t move around too much. And many people actually do already watch TV while ironing. So why not switch to a channel in your target language? Many people have access to TV channels from all over the world but often don’t know about it. Typical examples for international channels are TV5 Monde (French), DW – Deutsche Welle (German) etc. Just check your entire list of channels, maybe you’ll find something.

Alternatively you could watch in a DVD with your favourite serial or use the internet to watch something online (from a legal source, of course).

2.) Listening to internet radio

This is fine for everything that needs to be done in the household provided that it doesn’t make a lot of noise. Just find a channel in your target language and there you go. While cleaning your bathroom you can listen to music or the news and although you won’t be able to listen actively, you’re at least exposed to your language for a certain period of time.

I usually use my smartphone and earphones while cleaning. The app I’m using is called TuneIn and the basic version is available for free.

3.) Listening to podcasts

Almost the same applies for podcasts as for internet radio, but listening to podcasts requires more attention. So I think this is better suited for tasks that don’t require you to move a lot or do not make any noise at all, such as ironing.

The good thing about listening to podcasts: You could create a habit. For example, every Thursday evening you do the laundry and listen to the latest episode of podcast XYZ. You automatically dedicate an hour or so to a listening activity in your target language each week. That could be an hour you wouldn’t have spent with language learning otherwise.

4.) Practising pronunciation

Do you dedicate enough time to practise pronunciation? No? Then you should clean your flat more often, because it’s the perfect time for exercises!

Never watch me cleaning my bathroom because sometimes that’s an odd image. I don’t know why it’s just the bathroom, but very often while cleaning it, I start doing some pronunciation exercises. Currently I’m trying really hard to improve my Spanish pronunciation and intonation, so you could see me cleaning the shower while repeating weird sounds like di di di vs. dri dri dri

5.) Describing what you’re doing

Something else you could do while cleaning etc. is actually to describe what you’re currently doing or which tools you’re using – in your target language of course!

It’s not something I do very often, because always when doing so, I start thinking a lot and just stop working. But this could be a nice task for improving your vocabulary.

6.) Singing songs

That’s the only thing I never do, because I’m the most horrible singer in the world - doesn’t matter in which language. But I’m convinced that this could work amazingly well for some of you. If you’re into music and like singing, you could just sing your favourite songs in Italian, Spanish etc. while getting your floor spick and span.

The stage is yours!

What’s your secret language learning activity while doing housework? Or don’t you do any housework at all?? :)
